Never Marry a Miftord Knit
The Piece
Alessandro Michele’s Gucci has always been packed with historical and pop culture references.
One item that stood out from his Spring Summer 2018 collection is this sweater that reads “Never Marry a Mitford.”
The Mitfords were six sisters, born in the early 20th century, that gained widespread attention for their stylish and controversial lives as young people, and for their public political divisions between communism and fascism.
Andrew Cavendish, the 11th Duke of Devonshire, liked to create “comedy jumpers” and the phrase “Never Marry a Mitford” adorned one of them. What makes this quote from the Duke so amusing is that he was married to the youngest of the sisters. The original jumpers from the 80’s were displayed in a 2018 exhibition.
